H-1B applications are on the rise

On Behalf of | Sep 5, 2023 | H-1B, Immigration

Across the United States, there is always a need for skilled workers, especially in the technology industry. To meet the demand for skilled labor, some employers are seeking foreign talent, hence the reason for H-1B applications coming in at record numbers.

What is the H-1B application?

According to the Department of Labor, the H-1B application is filed by an employer who is seeking to hire foreign talent. Employees will work in specialty occupations for up to six years, and they must possess special skills and hold at least a bachelor’s degree in their respective industries. Employers file their applications through the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Factors responsible for the significant increase

According to a Boundless study, there are several factors that are responsible for the increase in H-1B applications. One major factor is the change in policies. Since President Joe Biden was elected, denials for these applications are at an all-time low, so this means that more companies are filing for employment visas. Another factor in the increase in applications is that the demand for highly skilled workers is significantly increasing.

A breakdown of the statistics

There are some key findings from the Boundless study that are of great interest to employers. The following are some key findings.

  • Only 2% of applications were denied in the FY 2022.
  • 70.8% of workers under the program are male.
  • The majority of those working in the program are from India, and China is in second place.
  • 66% of application approvals were for computer-related jobs.

Decreasing barriers so highly skilled foreign workers can easily work and live in the United States carries numerous benefits. Employers can tap into a pool of talent worldwide to foster an environment of global collaboration and innovation in the workplace. Not to mention, the H-1B program will help to enrich our workforce by introducing fresh ideas that contribute to the economic growth and advancement of our nation.
