Applying for a family visa can be overwhelming if you are unprepared for the visa interview. California residents who wish to bring additional family members to the United States are encouraged to come to the interview prepared with as much documentation as possible. Being prepared for the interview can expedite the process.

Gathering information for your visa interview

Many qualifications must be met before entering the U.S. on a family visa. There are four types of family visa programs available. Each program will have requirements that must be met for the visa to be approved.

Some of the documentation that you should bring to the visa interview, regardless of visa type, includes:

  • Identification for the applicants
  • Health records showing immunizations
  • Proof of relationship
  • Educational or business documentation

Most visa applications will have a list of documents required to process that type of visa.

Waivers are available for some issues that may prevent visa approval

Some situations may require you to apply for a waiver so the visa can be approved. Waivers are available for many reasons, including health issues, criminal backgrounds, and finances. If you believe you need to apply for a waiver, bring the necessary information to the visa interview.

Many waivers are granted immediately. The U.S. State Department has regulations that provide instant waiver approval for many unique situations. If you are required to have a waiver, don’t panic, it’s just another step in the process.

Applying for a family visa can be challenging. However, when you are prepared for each process step, you will see that the challenge is easy to overcome.
